Easy cruiser after a speed workout yesterday. I was stuck on the good ole tradmill this morning. I had to get the run in before Maddie’s school started, and running in the dark, cold Maine morning was unappealing. So, Maddie watched Charlotte’s Web, while I rocked out to my iPod. She fell asleep during the second half of the run. Just as I finished, she woke up and was very grumpy. She’s been pretty irritable the last few days; I’d attribute it mostly to steroids and significantly altered sleep patterns. In between stretches, I walked the fine line of encouraging her to take her morning medications. Usually, she rocks and takes the medications without incident. Today, however, was a different story. I tried to make them sound appealing by offering up all sorts of “chasers” and “mixers”, like chocolate sauce, yogurt, or applesauce, but she wasn’t buying what I was selling. We both ended up very frustrated. I was stressed because I still had to get her to school and get me to work, and I can think of a myriad of reasons why she was stressed. So much for a nice and easy cool down after a run; instead, I found myself chasing Maddie around the house with dexamethasone, bactrim, a bottle of Hershey’s chocolate sauce and yogurt. All the while, I was still dripping with sweat from my run. But in the end, we worked it out. She made it to school, I got to the hospital on time, and, more important, we talked about why we both got frustrated and how we might avoid it next time!

Hey Emily – It is great to read the logs and hear about all of the progress you are both making. It’s a great way to keep people informed about your progress, and fundraising to help other families with children who are ill. Very brave.

Both Mary and I had a good chuckle thinking of you chasing MadDog around with a bottle of Hershey’s and yogurt.

Mary and I will be there (yea, with the Cow Bell) on the 20th! We will be hard to miss…

Sounds like the challenges also work to bring you closer and in a better place to learn more about how each of you works alone and how you can all work together as a family to get through the day-to-day routine. Chocolate sauce sure sounds good to me though. :)

    Hello Emily,

This website looks great. I hope Maddie has a great birthday. Wish I’d known to wish you a Happy Birthday the day we talked. Many happy returns, belatedly.

I was impressed with Maddie’s articulate responses when you and she discussed chasers the other day. It doesn’t surprise me that you two worked it out. Talking is good.

Let me know if there’s ever anything I can do. I live a few miles from Sheepscot Valley up 218 and have a six year old boy who plays well with kids of all ages.

It was great to meet you. Hope to see you ’round town.

    Lee

    Hey there You 3!
We can just see it now – who can run faster and further? Maddie! Especially when it comes to escaping the crazy mama with the dripping hair and big spoon! Tee hee…

That little girl is running TOWARD great things! :)

Great site, and let’s all hope for a big turnout in this fundraiser. Those kids sure need all the support we can give them, not to mention the families that care for them on their journeys to recovery.

You both are truly inspiring and I hope we can help you to get lots of media exposure, lots of support and best of all lots of goodness and love in your lives.

    Mish Mike and Dylan Morgenstern.

Hi Emily and Maddie! Happy 4th birthday, Maddie! Janna and I still look at the photo of you and her playing next to your chickens from 2 summers ago. We hope your training Emily and treatment Maddie, go well this winter. I can only imagine how challenging this is for your family. I will be thinking of you and following your logs from Florida. We will be back in Rockport in May. Best of luck at the trials, Emily! I did not qualify this time around, but am not injured for once! Hope we can connect in Maine this spring/summer. Love, Dana, Janna, and Ed

    Hi Em, Maddie, and Brad-

This is way cool to have these updates- I, too, love the description of you chasing Maddie with the meds and chocolate – been there, done that with Nick -

I know it sounds trite – but you are very inspiring – thanks for keeping us in the loop-

Hey Em – Can you send a picture (autographed?) of the two (or three?) of you for my office door? I’ll post with info about the two trials website… current nursing students will be interested to follow your marathons this spring.

You go girls (and Brad!) Laurie
