I went down to Cape Elizabeth to run in the Mid-Winter 10-miler.  I used it as a tempo run within a long run.  I did a 5 mile warm-up, then the race, followed by a 3 mile cool down.  I had wanted to run somewhere between 6:05-6:10 pace for the race (tempo) section, but I think I ended up around 6:12 or so.  I’d say that I felt OK, not great but not horrible.  This run was a good gauge of where my fitness is, since I only had one tempo run under belt up to this point and I hadn’t had a really hard effort since October.  Now, I have a sense of where I am and, more important, how far I need to progress in the remaining weeks.  One thing that I love about the marathon is that the training is its own marathon; I use each day’s effort to build toward the April 20th goal.  Kudos to Sheri, Kasie, and Kristin (all three Oly Trials qualifiers) on a great race!  Overall, there was a great turn-out for the event and the weather was surprisingly pleasant for this time of year.

We certainly could not have asked for better weather. Last year, it was in the low teens with high winds which made for a much less pleasant racing experience.

Glad to catch up with you at the race. Everybody I spoke with seemed to enjoy themselves, so the race directors should definitely be proud of the event they put on.
