Laura and I ran the Strawberry Shortcake Shuffle in Damariscotta last weekend and thought of you both because we know you both ran it last year (and did really well!) Even though we've all moved away from Maine now, I (and I know all of my teammates at Bowdoin) wish Maddie the best and hope that someday she grows up to be a great runner like her mom (or whatever else she wants to be!) and maybe even becomes a polar bear someday. I am 43 years old and going through chemo for stage 3 colon cancer. It started in my appendix which is very rare. I have three types of aggressive cells. If a child like Maddie has the courage to get through her treatments, then it inspires me to do the same. The steroids are killing me. I thought I was too young to get this awful disease, but then I hear about young kids having to deal with this and it puts things in perspective quickly for me. I wish Maddie the best and will pray for her and a lifetime of love, joy, happiness and freedom from Cancer.
